Local Business
Learn local SEO strategies for your photographer portfolio website to rank in your city and book more shoots. Practical tips for Indian photographers.
You're talented, your Instagram looks stunning, and yet — your enquiry DMs stay empty most weeks. Meanwhile, another photographer in your city with average work is booking 8–10 shoots a month. The difference isn't skill. It's visibility on Google. When someone searches "wedding photographer in Jaipur" or "candid photographer near me," you need your portfolio website to show up. Here's how to make that happen.
Why your photography portfolio needs its own website
Instagram is a portfolio, not a discovery engine. It doesn't appear when people search Google for a photographer in their city. A website you own is discoverable, credible, and works 24/7 without algorithm changes burying your posts.
A client who finds you through a Google search is already intent on booking. They're not scrolling for entertainment — they're looking to hire. That's the highest-quality lead you can get. Plus, a website lets you collect enquiries via form, display reviews, show your pricing tiers, and link your Google Maps location. Instagram gives you none of that properly.
Claim and optimise your Google Business Profile
Your Google Business Profile (GBP) is the single most impactful free thing you can do for local visibility. It puts your studio on Google Maps and shows your info in the local pack — those top three results with the map.
Fill every single field: primary category as "Photographer," secondary categories like "Wedding Photographer" or "Portrait Photographer," your studio address, service areas, hours, website link, and at least 20–30 high-quality photos. Add a new post or photo update every week — Google rewards active profiles.
Reviews are the real ranking signal here. Ask every happy client to leave a Google review with their event type and city mentioned naturally. Even 10–15 genuine reviews can push you above competitors who have none. Reply to every review — positive or negative — with a personal response.
Build city-specific and service-specific pages
One homepage cannot rank for everything. If you serve multiple cities or offer different types of photography, you need dedicated pages for each combination.
