A website that Google can't find is a shop built in the middle of a forest. Yet most small business sites are launched and simply left for Google to discover — sometimes for months. This guide is the no-jargon version of what actually makes sites appear and rank in 2025: getting indexed, choosing keywords you can win, the on-page fundamentals, local SEO for Indian businesses, and how long results honestly take. No magic tricks — because there aren't any.

Search Google for `site:yourdomain.com`. If results appear, you're indexed. If not, you have an indexing problem, not a ranking problem — and no amount of "SEO" fixes a site that isn't in the index. The fix:
1Create a free Google Search Console account and verify your domain (a one-click DNS verification on Cloudflare, or an HTML file upload).
2Submit your sitemap (usually `yourdomain.com/sitemap.xml`) in Search Console → Sitemaps.
3Use URL Inspection on your homepage and click "Request Indexing".
4Make sure you have not accidentally left "noindex" enabled (a common leftover from development) and that robots.txt isn't blocking pages.
Indexing usually happens within days. Every future page you publish gets the same treatment: publish → inspect → request indexing. Search Console is also where you'll see which searches show your site — it's the single most valuable free SEO tool that exists.
Step 2: Target keywords you can actually win
A keyword is just the phrase a customer types. "Shoes" is a war zone you will never win; "vegan running shoes under ₹4000 in Bengaluru" is a street you can own. The beginner method:
List your services × your city/area — "dental implants Indiranagar", "CA for startups Pune". These local-intent phrases are winnable and bring buyers, not browsers.
Collect the exact words customers use — your WhatsApp enquiries and reviews are a keyword goldmine. If five people write "fixed my laptop screen same day", that phrase belongs on your page.
Check the competition — Google your phrase. If page one is all national brands and marketplaces, get more specific. If you see small businesses and forums, you can compete.
One page = one keyword theme. Don't try to rank one page for ten services; give each service its own page.
Step 3: On-page SEO — the five places that matter
Google reads a page through a handful of signals. Get these right consistently and you're ahead of 80% of small sites:
Element
Rule
Example
Title tag
Keyword near the front, brand at end, ≤60 chars
Wedding Photography in Pune | StudioName
Meta description
A 150-char ad for the click, include the keyword naturally
"200+ weddings shot across Pune..."
H1 heading
One per page, states the topic
H1: Wedding Photography in Pune
Body content
Answer the searcher's full question; 600+ words for competitive topics; use the phrase in the first 100 words
Services, galleries, FAQs, pricing signals
Image alt text
Describe the image as if describing it on a phone call

Then the ranking factor that dwarfs everything: helpful content. A page that answers the searcher's question completely — with specifics, prices, photos, FAQs — beats a thin page with perfect keyword placement every single update of Google's algorithm. Write for the customer; the SEO is how you label it.
Step 4: Local SEO — the shortcut for Indian businesses
Reading about it — or ready to have it built?
Memora designs and builds complete business websites for a flat ₹3,999 — copy, SEO and launch included, live in 7 days. Fixed quote in 24 hours.
For any business serving a physical area, local SEO delivers faster results than anything else. The core moves:
Google Business Profile — claim it, fill every field, pick accurate categories, add photos monthly. This is what shows in Maps and the Map Pack.
Reviews — ask every happy customer; reply to every review in your own words (Google reads replies). Reviews are the #1 local ranking and trust factor.
NAP consistency — identical Name, Address, Phone on your site, profile, and every directory (Justdial, Sulekha, IndiaMART if relevant).
Location pages — if you serve multiple areas, one honest page per area ("Home interior design in Whitefield") beats one generic page trying to cover the whole map.
Step 5: The boring multiplier — speed and mobile
Google's page-experience signals (Core Web Vitals) measure whether your site is fast and stable on a mid-range phone. You don't need to memorise the metrics; you need a modern setup: lightweight images (WebP), a static/edge host like Cloudflare, no twenty plugins fighting each other. This is a build-time decision — it's why we deliver every Memora site on Next.js + Cloudflare with 90+ PageSpeed scores as standard rather than an afterthought.
How long until results? (honest numbers)
Goal
Realistic timeline
Why
Get indexed
3–14 days
Search Console indexing after sitemap submission
Rank for your brand name
1–4 weeks
Low competition, strong relevance
Rank for "service + area" terms
1–3 months
Depends on local competition and reviews
Rank for high-volume national terms
6–18 months+
Requires content depth and authority (links)
Anyone promising page one in a week for competitive terms is either lying or planning tactics that get sites penalised. SEO is compounding: each good page and each review makes the next one easier.
The weekly 30-minute SEO routine
1Open Search Console → Performance: note any query where you rank #5–#15 ("striking distance").
2Improve that page for the query: better title, add a section answering the question fully, add an FAQ.
3Publish or update one piece of content (a service page detail, a short article, new photos with proper alt text).
4Ask two happy customers for Google reviews; reply to any new ones.
5Check that the enquiry form still works. Always.
Thirty minutes a week, honestly maintained, outperforms a panicked annual "SEO push". It's the compounding habit that separates sites that grow from sites that exist.
Want SEO done with the build, not sold separately?
Every Memora website ships with on-page SEO, Search Console setup, sitemap, analytics and 90+ PageSpeed scores included — starting at ₹3,999.
No. Google Search Console, Google Business Profile, GA4 and Bing Webmaster Tools are free and cover 90% of what a small business needs. Paid tools (Ahrefs, Semrush) help at competitive scale, not at the beginning.
Are backlinks still important in 2025?+
Yes, but quality beats quantity massively. One link from a local news site, a supplier's partner page or a relevant directory outweighs a hundred paid spam links — which can actively get you penalised. Earn links by being linkable: useful content, local sponsorships, genuine partnerships.
AI answers now appear in Google. Should I still invest in SEO?+
Yes — AI answers are built from indexed, structured, trustworthy content. Being the cited source is the new page one. Structure your content with clear headings, FAQs and specific facts so AI systems can quote you, and keep building the brand searches that AI can't replace.
Why did my ranking drop suddenly?+
Common causes: the page broke or got noindexed, a Google core update re-evaluated thin content, or a competitor improved. Check Search Console coverage and performance dates first — the timeline usually tells you what changed.
